The department of History Archaeology and Social Anthropology (IAKA) of the University of Thessaly carried out a new excavation programme at Soros, a location existing within the limits of the municipality of Iolkos. Soros is usually identified with Archaic-Classical Amphanai but it is occasionally linked to Pagasai as well (Euripides, Hercules Mainomenos 392. Strabo IX 435). The site was initially partly excavated by Ap.Arvanitopoulos (PAE 1909, 162 f. and Inscribed steles of Demetriada-Pagases, 70). In 1973 a group of German archaeologists ran a small excavation research at Soros under the supervision of V. Milojcic (AAA 7, 1974, 65-75, fig. 22-37. BCH 98, 1974, Chroniques, 662. P. Marzolff, "Antike Stadtebau und Architektur in Thessalien", in Thessalia: Fifteen years of archaeological research, Athens 1994, 256, fig. 1). Currently the 13th Ephorate of Prehistoric and Classical Antiquities carries out rescue excavations in the area of the ancient cemetery under the direction of Dr. A. Batziou-Eustathiou (AD 40, 1985, 186. 42, 1987, 246. 43, 1988, 242. P. Triantaphilopoulou, The cemetery of Amphanes, Volos 2000. Idem, "Amphanes", in Monuments of Magnesia, Volos 2002, 134-139).

The excavation at Soros is a new project conducted by the Archaeology Department of IAKA in collaboration with the 13th Ephorate of Prehistoric and Classical Antiquities. The main concern of this project is the training of the archaeology students in the excavation methods and techniques. The second aim is to study the sanctuaries and the overall area of the ancient fortified settlement.
