Cycles of collapse in Greek Prehistory: Early Iron Age practices and Middle Helladic analogies

Φίλιππα-Touchais Άννα

It has been observed that at the beginning of the Iron Age there appear cultural practices recalling those of the MH period. Discerned mainly in burial customs and, to a lesser degree, in architecture and artefacts, these similarities have been interpreted in two different ways : according to the first, which wanted to stress the innovating character of the Early Iron Age, they were accidental; for the second one, which wanted to put forward the continuity from the MBA, they were reappearances of earlier practices, caused by cultural reversion. A new approach to this phenomenon, based on a detailed re-examination of the archaeological data and on theoretical analysis, aims to define its extent and light up its significance in terms of socio-economic organisation.
