Ceramic variability and drinking habits in Iron Age Crete: the case of the coated cup

W.D.E. Coulson, a renowned pottery expert, dedicated much of his career to the study of unimpressive open vessels of small size. An inquiry on a Cretan example of this class, the coated cup, is therefore considered as an appropriate subject for a conference that celebrates his work. Elaborating on and departing from standard typological approaches, the inquiry concentrates on the considerable increase in the size and capacity that affected this type of vessels in the course of the 8th century. The rationale of this change is inferred and its impact upon drinking habits and social attitudes is assessed. Particular reference is laid upon the evidence from the cemetery of Eleutherna.
