Gortyn. The rise of the polis: evidence from the settlement and the sanctuary

This paper aims at clarifying the social and political organization of Gortyn across the Dark Age. I will report the results obtained by re-studying the old excavations on the Acropolis of Haghios Ioannis, where the first settlement and traces of ritual activity, before the building of the sanctuary, have been found. Furthermore I intend to outline the relationship between the settlement and the first phase of sanctuary on the hill of Haghios Ioannis, the settlement on the hill of Profitis Ilias and the tholos tomb found on the foot of the hill of Haghios Ioannis, in order to gain some insights on the transition between the LMIIIC and the Geometric period.
