2nd Congress of Prehistoric ArchaeologyThe 2nd Congress of Prehistoric Archaeology, co-organised by the Department of History Archaeology and Social Anthropology of the University of Thessaly, the Department of History and Archaeology of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and the 13rth Ephorate of Prehistory and Classical Archaeology of the Ministry of Culture, will take place from the 4th to the 7th of December hosted by the University of Thessaly at Volos. The Congress is dedicated to the founder of Greek prehistoric archaeology, Christos Tsountas, on the occasion of the hundredth anniversary since the publication of his seminal book Ai prohistorikai Acropoleis Diminiou kai Sesklou, (Athens, 1908). The aim of the conference is to chart the numerous issues and topics of importance for Greek prehistorians at the beginning of the 21st century. The themes to be discussed include actual research prospects from the Palaeolithic to the Bronze Age, theoretical and methodological issues, matters of interdisciplinarity, theoretical approaches to the analysis and interpretation of material culture, artefacts, settlements and landscapes, and the role and reception of prehistory in contemporary Greek society. The afternoon session on Saturday (6/12/2008, 16:00-21:00pm) will be dedicated to Christos Tsountas. The talks will refer to the founding contribution of Christos Tsountas to the Aegean and Thessalian prehistory, to his life and work as an archaeologist, as a member of the Archaeological Society of Athens, as a university "teacher", as well as to the lasting legacy of his innovative work for the last 100 years. After the session, archaelogists Maria Theochari, Giorgos Hourmouziadis and Kostas Gallis will be honoured, as prehistorians who are connected to Thessalian prehistory, and have furthered the work of Christos Tsountas.
