“Eyes shut, muted voices”: narrating the post civil war era through a monument

The recent construction of a memorial concerning ‘Resistance’ against Nazi occupation during the Second World War and the ensuing Civil War, as well as the burning down of the village, has triggered long and enduring political conflicts and tensions in an Attica community. It has provoked multiple and often contradicting discourses and memories on the civil war trauma until now silenced and repressed both at the individual, collective and institutional level. The painful, often unexpected complex relations between notions of trauma, evil, remembering/forgetting, and myth, which this process has revealed through the unfolding of alternative versions of oral “history” surrounding different orders of political power, will be analysed from an anthropological and psychoanalytic perspective.
