«Our tears dried up…»: personal accounts of the Greek community in Czechoslovakia

The Greek Civil War led to the exodus of nearly a hundred thousand Greek citizens to the Eastern bloc countries and the establishment of entirely new ethnic communities in their host countries with a strong political background. About twelve thousand Greek Civil War refugees arrived in Czechoslovakia in the late 1940s and stayed until these days. The presentation shows different aspects of Greek community life in communist Czechoslovakia during the Cold War and afterwards. By the use of oral history methods, based on more than 50 eyewitness accounts collected in the last three years, it examines the private strategies of three generations of Greek political refugees.
