Motivating empathy: oral history as a tool for antiracist education

This paper will present a school project based on oral history. The teaching problem which it tried to solve was the following: The pupils ignore the history of twentieth century Greek emigration, a fact that obstructs their acceptance of today’s multicultural society. After having studied a body of texts (literature, written testimonies, documentaries), the pupils produced a questionnaire, they filmed interviews of Greeks and foreigners who had experienced the problems of migration and they created a short documentary. By learning about Greek migration the pupils involved moved forward to empathy and understanding of the difficulties immigrants are facing in Greece.
