Building a storytelling community while revisiting local history. The Volos experience

Every storytelling performance is able to transform a group in a storytelling community. The storyteller functions traditionally as a “guardian of memory” and responds to the community’s concept of history. Is it possible to revive this process in contemporary Greece? We will refer to our experience of a storytelling workshop with elder citizens of Volos who have formed for five years an active storytelling group exchanging stories, visiting schools and public libraries and broadcasting on the local radio station. Their contribution includes a book as well as a documentary film. They constituted an exemplary link between ancestors and descendants, the dead and the unborn.
