Studying Gypsy history in Argentina. The necessity of anthropological approach

Although according to unofficial estimates there are 300 000 Gypsies in Argentina, their existence is cloaked in silence partly due to the self-narrative of a white country. One of the major challenges in studying Gypsies is a lack of written documents. Conventional historical sources available in Argentina are illustrative of external labeling. This limitation means that to uncover the experiences of groups who had been disregarded one must turn to the oral sources. By subverting the dominant narrative and a hegemonic way of telling it, the paper argues for an anthropological approach to the study of Gypsy history in Argentina.
