The social dimension of memory in testimonies of Jewish survivors of the Holocaust in Greece

At the centre of the paper are the testimonies of Greek-Jewish survivors which were collected by the USC Shoah Foundation Institute’s Visual History Archive. By placing the memory in the framework of the social and the biographical continuum, the paper attempts to illuminate the multiplicity of the experience of the survivor as well as the social dimension of the formation of his/her identity through memory. The paper aims at inserting the class and gender aspects of the experiences of the survivors in the investigation of the construction of memory in order to illuminate dimensions of the memory of the survivors that have been obscured by the contemporary focus on the a-historical emphasis on trauma and on the impossibility of witnessing.
