The museum as a place of interaction between individual and collective memory

The museum is one of the sites of memory par excellence, a site of inscription and reproduction of collective memory certainly, but also a site which increasingly encourages the recollection of personal reminiscences. As such museums provide an ideal field for analysing the multiple ways in which personal experiences and recollections may be situated within the broader context of social or collective memory. This paper sets out to examine how museums address the various aspects of memory. At the center of discussion lies the subtle distinction between personal and collective memory, as I am particularly interested in detecting the ways in which these two forms of memory interact within the museum.
