Visviki Magoula – Velestino. The So-called Megaron Reconsidered

In 1941 Hans Reinerth and his team of the Reichsamt fur Vorgeschichte came to Thessaly to excavate the Late Neolithic Thessalian site of Visviki Magoula. One of his aims was to point out its relevance for proving the presence of Northern intruders in Greece during the Late Neolithic period. Since Reinerth considered the megaron house the proto-type of the Nordic house he interpreted the building remains of Visviki as such a megaron. However, the restudy of the architectural remains shows certain differences between the published plan and the documentation of the excavation. Furthermore, the multitude of finds from the Arapi and Otzaki A-phases as well as the drawings point to a multi-room building complex of oblong layout which is not unique in the prehistory of the Balkan peninsula.
