East Locris between Thessaly and Phocis

Several places in Central Greece (some of them with recent findings) allow us to re-define the relationships between Thessaly, Phocis and East Locris in Late Archaic and Classical times. As Thessaly and Phocis had not truly common frontiers, the contacts, mainly of warlike nature, were fulfilled through the East Locris territory. The different invasions of Phocis carried out by Thessalians used the passages provided by the Locrians. Several places were relevant in these actions: firstly the pass of Thermopylae; in the second place the sanctuary of Apollo at Abai (near to the pass at Hyampolis); in the last place, the site of Daphnous, a locrian place later conquered and held by the Phocians. My purpose in this paper is to analyze how these places interacted in order to better explain the course of the conflicts between Thessalians and Phocians.
