Provenancing the gold of Kasanaki with ion beam analysis.

An Eu-ARTECH Transnational Access programme was dedicated to the study of twenty gold objects found in 2004 at the Mycenaean tomb of Kasanaki. In order to determine the composition of the alloys and the origin of the gold, the objects were analysed in a non-destructive way by PIXE and PIXE-XRF at the AGLAE accelerator of the C2RMF. We could prove the exploitation of alluvial deposits by measuring the concentrations of the characteristic trace elements of gold such as tin and platinum. The combination of elemental analysis with X-ray radiography, optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy carried out on the objects at the C2RMF gave a large amount of information on the manufacture techniques of the gold foils and the assemblage techniques of the gold beads.
