The ecology of the area as a whole has had direct impact on the formation and development of human settlements and on the settlers' activities. The biologist will investigate the natural vegetation of the plateau, concentrating mainly on fallow fields and the slopes. Ancient literature preserves the names of a few plants which grew here, and the identification of these is an important part of the project. The investigation of the natural resources also involves the study of the animal species presently encountered in the area, and their comparison with species known from written sources.
