Encountering death, before and after: The Bacchic-Orrphic incised lamellae
The texts incised on very small, paper-thin gold foils in which the underworld deities are addressed to, present a rare case: during initiation they offer guidance to the prospective mystes before his/her encountering death, and, after the mystes is dead, they accompany him/her to the grave as a token/script of what to expect and how to behave when in the underworld.
