Necromancy and Cultural Identity in Heliodorus' Aithiopika
Necromantic scenes in literature amplify the foreignness and alterity of an environment or situation, and are, therefore, a powerful literary device which authors use to comment on their protagonists’ actions and interactions. In my paper, I argue that Heliodorus inserts a necromantic scene in the ancient novel Aithiopika to further address his themes of ethnicity and identity and to guide his readers in interpreting his text.
