Geophysical prospection at Koutroulou Magoula, Phthiotida 2012

In January 2012 a magnetometry survey was conducted to the east of current excavations at the Middle Neolithic tell site of Koutroula Magoula by a team from the University of Southampton and members of the Koutroulou Magoula project. The results clearly showed structural remains in the same orientation as those that have already been exposed through excavation, most probably buildings. Of considerable interest is also the evidence for possible perimeter walls and ditches surrounding the tell, confirming thus indications provided by our 2010-11 topographical survey, which showed some sort of terracing activity. These results which we hope to test through excavation during the 2012 field season, prove that Koutroulou Magoula was a substantial Neolithic settlement, much larger than originally anticipated, and much more complex in terms of its spatial arrangement.
