Pottery production at Hellenistic Halos

The settlement of Halos and the surrounding region of Almiros have been the focus of archaeological investigation for over 30 years. Occupation of the site stretches from the early Iron Age (10th century BC) to the Hellenistic period (3rd to early 2nd centuries BC). During this period a substantial pottery production tradition has been assumed for the settlement. The understanding of patterns of pottery production, supply and consumption within the natural and cultural landscape, requires the identification of the local ceramics production as opposed to imports from other regions in Greece and beyond. In order to establish the compatibility of the Hellenistic pottery with locally available raw materials, the sampling of a range of local clay and rock sediments within the Almiros region will be carried out, characterizing the use of these raw materials within ancient pottery production at Hellenistic Halos. The study of the clay and rock samples is combined with petrographic thin section analysis, comprising 100 well dated and documented ceramic objects and domestic vessels from the combined Dutch and Greek excavations.
