Delphi: Preventive conservation in the storeroom of stone sculpture
(poster paper)

Around 1998, Jean-Luc Martinez curator, director of the Greek Department in the Louvre conceived a project of rearrangement of the Museum of Delphi storerooms of sculpture with the help of Daniele Braunstein, conservator in the same Department today. But it really began in 2007, after the reorganization of the collections of the Museum of Delphi in 2003-2004 and the building of a new storeroom, in collaboration with the EFA and the Ephoria of Delphi. Our aims were to create a space that would fit the general standards of conservation and preservation of the sculptures. We focused on the main problem, that is to say the display and storage of the stone fragments. This paper describes the long-term solutions we chose to make the transport and the handling of the fragments more practical; we also found specific material to conserve stone sculpture and to eliminate, as much as possible, the sources of risk. Although the goals of the project are not absolutely achieved yet, we would like to present the results and the improvements in the storage of the sculptures. This work is of course very helpful for some traditional museum activities, such as inventory and counting, but above all it makes the research work easier for all scholars.
