The cult of Demeter Thesmophoros at Hellenistic Halos

A small building situated in the upper town of Hellenistic Halos was formerly interpreted by the excavator as a Sepulchral Building (Reinders, 1988). However, recent reexamination of the finds revealed that the building actually housed a cult for Demeter, which was practised here in the early third century B.C. The assemblage, consisting mostly of terracotta figurines and pottery, is somewhat distinctive from other known finds from Demeter sanctuaries in Thessaly and elsewhere, may shed some light on the specific cult practised at Hellenistic Halos.
