Paper abstract

Cities and territories in Epiknemidian Lokris.

Adolfo J. Dominguez
[Professor of Ancient History, Facultad de Filosofia y Letras. Universidad Autonoma de Madrid]

My purpose in this paper is to present the main results of a Research Project carried out by a team of the Spanish Universidad Autonoma de Madrid in Epiknemidian Lokris. Although this territory had not been before the subject of a comprehensive analysis, the collection and study of the published notices as well as a survey carried out during the summer of 2004 has let us to suggest some mechanisms in the operation of the territorial structure of this region. Besides, the use of cartography and GIS lets us to propose some hypotheses about the relationships between the different cities which shared the territory. A not irrelevant problem is the lack of identification of some of the cities known through the archaeological record; besides, ancient sources refer to cities not yet identified. Although we cannot establish true identifications for all the cities, we shall try to advance some new proposal; besides, an outlook on the development of the Lokrian settlement shall be suggested.
